In a world where terribly mediocre tunes dominate the airwaves, a producer stands apart to deliver bassface and reesefingers. That producer? Yanntek! In the rarest of occurrences, Ammo founder and operater, Coffey, manages to get this beast to take a breather from melding together dancefloor destroying frequencies. Yanntek tears himself away from making beats so fat, if they were to step on a scale, it would read, “To Be Continued.” But why interrupt such a methodological madman? Well… to answer a few silly questions about his music of course. Why else?

COFFEY: What’s the word, Yannman?! How’s it?

YANNMAN: At the moment, it’s quite cool. Depends on the music I listen to. Fresh. Funky with a touch of deepness, thanks!

COFFEY: We’ve been searching high and low for a nickname for you at the Ammo Camp. Any special words to Chris Wreckage for coming up with “Yannman?”

YANNTEK: Indeed: One day… One day we’ll make a Yodel-Funk competition, wait for it! Haha, big ups Chris!

COFFEY: Tell us a little about ya’self. Where you’re from, how old you are and all that jazz.

YANNTEK: Well, I’m currently living in Binsfeld, which is in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. But not for much longer I hope I’m 19 years old and yeah.. I love Jazz!

COFFEY: What inspired the name “Yanntek.”

YANNTEK: As my real name is “YANNick” and one of my aims is to develop and design recognizable and special producing TECHniques, I decided to call this project Yanntek. Additionally, I love futuristic and TECHnical stuff.

COFFEY: How’d you end up getting into Drum & Bass?

YANNTEK: Honestly, I was never really into Drum & Bass and “snare-influenced” electronic genres. They weren’t powerful and defined enough for my taste, also I found them kinda cold, emotionless.

Then I discovered “Secrets That Burn” by Xilent one year ago and this moment changed everything. I started listening to Neurofunk and tried to produce my own tune of this genre.

COFFEY: What inspired you to start producing?

YANNTEK: I think a sort of inspiration was inborn, as my father played different instruments in several Cuban bands for a long time and my grandfather was leader of a music-ensemble in Germany.

When I listened to diverse songs at a very young age, I wondered how particular sounds I liked were made and sometimes felt the need to change some of these sounds/arrangements the way I preferred.

So I took piano lessons for a couple of years and then got myself my very first drum pattern software called Beatcraft. Was at the age of 11 or 12. From then on there was no turning back for me.

COFFEY: Speaking of producing, you just released tunes “Wings” and “Night Flight” on Ammunition, both of which are getting some huge support, and tearing up the charts. Number 8 in Beatport’s Dnb Releases section?! Madness. Tell us a little about that release.

YANNTEK: Haha, well I didn’t expect that ranking at all, thanks to everyone supporting me! With “Wings” I tried to go a little bit in a dreamy direction and tried to convey an uplifting feeling at the same time, as “having wings” is a dreamy but uplifting topic

Same as for the Audiosurf Ep, I tried to produce the second tune with a total different feeling. Xilent posted his video of his gig in Tokyo during this time which fascinated me and as I love Japan/Tokyo, I decided to make a tune with the feeling of “flying over a big city”, like Tokyo.

COFFEY: Mandatory question: What does your production setup consist of?

YANNTEK: I’m producing on an iMac with Cubase 5 as my main DAW (I made Audiosurf with Logic Pro tho) and for studio mixes and certain future collaborations I use Ableton Live. For monitoring I use the Yamaha HS80M and KRK KNS-8400 headphones connected to a Saffire Pro 14 interface.

COFFEY: If you had a Yanntek fanboy come up and hump your leg for production advice, what would you tell him?

YANNTEK: A boy humping my leg?? Not a pleasant imagination to be honest… But well, my answer depends on the question he’d ask. My general advice is: Listen, analyze, practice, develop. That’s how I do it.

COFFEY: Would you prefer if it was a Yanntek fan… girl…. humping your leg?

YANNTEK: I don’t prefer any beings humping my leg!!!

COFFEY: You sir… are a liar.

YANNTEK: You’re right. I’m a goddamn liar. In reality, I’m a special agent alien, sent from outta space.

COFFEY: Lol, word?! That must be where you get your signature style few producers are able to accomplish then, right? You and Xilent seem to be shaping up this emerging “subgenre” in Dnb / Neurofunk. What are we calling it?

YANNTEK: Thanks! We call it ULTRAFUNK. This shall be the positive way of looking into the future…

   Latest tracks by Yanntek

COFFEY: Funky. Do you have any influences when producing Dnb?

YANNTEK: Hmm, there’re a lot of influences for me. Mostly futuristic / fantasy imaginations, pictures, feelings… and of course Xilent, Receptor, Kloé and Noisia. Oh and I love to get inspired by the Namco Sound Team who make the Tekken soundtracks. Especially love the ones from Tekken Tag Tournament and Tekken 5. Hwoarang ftw.

COFFEY: Can you give us a list of some of your favorite artists?

YANNTEK: When it comes to Neurultradrum’nfunkjunglebass: Xilent, Kloé, Noisia, Receptor, Engage, Kung, Landscapers, Wreckage Machinery, Neutral Point, Bcee, Netsky and sometimes I even enjoy to listen to some good ol’ Rey Keith tunes.

COFFEY: Top 10 current favorite tunes?

YANNTEK:

COFFEY: What’s a Genma?

YANNTEK: It’s the moon and a hammer. An elf and and an angel. Two suspects in need of blueberry pie.

COFFEY: HA, “suspects.” Well played sir! I heard you’re helping run the badman sub label of Ammunition, Caliber Music.

YANNTEK: Ah, you did? Well yeah, then it’s true I think!

Really enjoy it so far, it’s a whole new experience and can’t wait to announce the forthcoming releases there! It’s gonna be PURE MADNESS with some huge producers!

COFFEY: Give us a random fact that we don’t know about you.

YANNTEK: I love Wavetable synthesis and 96 dB slew rate on filters.

COFFEY: If you could do away with any 1 song on the planet, what song would it be… and why?

YANNTEK: Well I dunno which consequences this would have on earth, causality is really a sulky bitch but.. Yes, it would definitely be the song “Lebt denn der alte Holzmichl noch” by De Randfichten.

Why? Because I hate this kinda music so much and this song even got the 3rd place in the German charts back then. Means I was forced to hear it everywhere at any second.

COFFEY: Anyone you want to bigup, shoutout, give a holler, or leg hump?

YANNTEK: Bigups, hollers AND even leg humps to all the listeners supporting me, to Xilent, Kloé and Axel from NFG! And of course.. to you.. lovely Café

CAFÉ: Awww, thanks Yannman! <3

Continuing in laying down stormer after stormer, Yanntek impresses yet again with 2 wickedly programmed neurofunk beats!

Yanntek, based out of Germany, is currently gaining widespread recognition across the circuit, causing HUGE waves with each release, in his take of what seems to be shaping up as “ultrafunk.”

With uplifting melodies, big basslines, and tight neuro drums, all infused together with a keen ear for mixdown, Yanntek’s “Wings” EP is a recipe for success. Already tried and proven on dance floors, this release is receiving big support from the likes of Mayhem, Kloe, NeurofunkGrid, and The Neurosphere Show to name a few!

Based out of Italy, The Marphoi Project engineers signature sounds with lustrous ambiance and invoking moody melodies! Delivering a killer release for Ammunition, The Marphoi Project puts up two songs on one release, titled “Unspoken.”

Creating a HUGE impact as the opening tune to the recent Ammo Podcast, “Unspoken,” sounds as if taken from the score of a blockbuster film, with an uplifting, piano laden intro, to all of a sudden twist and warp its way into a dark electronica stepper over a sudden 16 bars.

The flipside, a bit more traditional for Ammo, follows the same opening structure (killer intro!), but drops into some proper grimey Drum & Bass rhythms, sure to make the dancefloor move!

This one due out Jan. 9th, 2012 via Ammunition Recordings!

Melding huge cinematic soundscapes, powerful melodies, big compressed drums, and snarling basslines together is no easy task. Well, and making it sound great in Drum & Bass anyways.

However, the production duo previously known as Imprintz & Kloe pulled it off with ease, time and time again! After some hugely successful releases on Ammunition, Imprintz & Kloe decided to let a select few producers have their take, with stems landing in the hands of talents Xilent and Exorcist!

Xilent & Exorcist each put their own spin on these melodic infused quality stompers, branding each with their own signature style. Receiving some great support since, Ammo has now released these bombs for the masses! Grab em!

In the frenzied week that he puts out his debut EP on Ammunition, Coffey sits down with artist Ford for a little Q&A! Although a newcomer to the Drum & Bass circuit, Ford’s sound is receiving support from DJ’s and Producers such as Optiv, Neonlight, Blokhe4d, Empress, and Aeph to name only a few!

Coffey: Tell us a little about yourself. A/S/L? lol

Ford: I’m 19, I live in a lovely place called Huddersfield… England. I’m studying Music Technology at Uni, but I spend nearly all my time producing.

Coffey: How did you end up getting into Drum & Bass?

Ford: I got heavily into dubstep after my friend showed me a Datsik track at school. After about a year or so, I felt it had begun to repeat itself and so I was hunting for some more tasty bass. I stumbled upon Calyx & Teebee, and was instantly sucked into the world of neurofunk.

Coffey: Nice! Love me some Calyx & Teebee. So, why did you choose the name “Ford?”

Ford: I didn’t. It chose me.

Coffey: Like the freakin car company, huh? Hahaha, you know we love you!

Ford: I drive a Ford Fiesta. They craft a very decent automobile, that is all. (Ford is my surname)

Coffey: You just had your debut release on Ammunition Recordings, with your “Serrated” EP. Tell us a little about that release.

Ford: After producing HUNDREDS of 1-2 minute tracks, “Serrated” got picked up by The NeurofunkGrid. Having heard the feedback from that track and various discussions with big-dogs like yourself I managed to complete my first full length track. The next 3 tracks fell in to place stupidly fast. I made “Speaks” in a day while on holiday.

Coffey: You’s a machine. How is it to work with such an awesome label? (Yeah, we like to toot our own horn! Teehee!)

Ford: It’s been a pleasure so far, although it can be quite taxing having to put up with Coffey’s grandad-humour…

Coffey: You bastard. My jokes are gold! *Sigh* You and my woman would get along great, haha! So what does your production setup consist of?

Ford: My Mac and a pair of KRK’s. Everything I’ve made is purely within Logic.

Coffey: People are constantly commenting on your tight drums and insane programming. Any advice for up’n'coming producers?

Ford: One of the biggest problems I gave myself was trying to replicate my favorite artists basslines. Creating the exact modulations, etc, is impossible. Instead, I’d say create your own sounds, which in turn, for me at least, helped develop my style.

As for drums, trying to turn a soggy snare into a snappy drum hit isn’t going to work. Any of my drums are usually layers and layers of different samples. For example: Taking a snare with a nice attack on it and over compressing it, layering it with snares with better decays, etc.

As for the rhythms n such, being a drummer helps.

Coffey: What are your influences in producing Dnb?

Ford: I’ve played the drums for quite a while now, and so groove and rhythm are a huge interest to me. Incorporating beats I learnt ages ago and putting them to 175 is a lot of fun

Aside from drums, I used to listen to instrumental / technical metal. I’m hugely into funk as well.

Coffey: Funk yeah! Who are some of your favorite artists?

Ford: It might surprise you but… Spor. Calyx, Apex, Teebee, Inside Info, Billain, Noisia, Memtrix, Phace.

Ford’s “Serrated” makes Beatport’s “10 Must Hear Dnb Tracks” for Week 48!

Coffey: Ha, yeah huge surpised there! All great artists, def. Any plans on picking up DJ’ing in the future?

Ford: Had my first mix about 3 hours ago Very busy at the moment but I can hardly ignore it any longer.

Coffey: Can you give us your Top 10 favorite tracks right now?

Ford:

Coffey: Any future releases / songs / projects that we should know about?

Ford: I have a 4 track neurofunk EP forthcoming on Overtech Recordings. My track “First Contact” is forthcoming on Mindtech Records. I have a remix of Memtrix’s intermission forthcoming on Close2Death. A progressive dubstep collaboration forthcoming on Cognition’s imprint. There’s a track forthcoming on Genome Records, and three other collaborations which we are keeping under wraps for now.

Coffey: Ooooh, under wraps you say? How enticing, I wonder who they *cough* are with. *cough cough*.

Are you a poltergeist?

Ford: Are you implying I’m a paranormal phenomenon which consists of events alluding to the manifestation of an imperceptible entity?

You must be mad, Sir.

Coffey: Fack… alright, I’ll admit… officially creeped out, haha! Any bigups, shoutouts, thanks, and all that jazz?

Ford: Bigup to NEUROFUNKGRID, for pretty much starting my career. Axel, you’re a legend. Shout to Coffey, Jae Overtech, and Ian C2D.

Much love for Deaton, Mead, and all my house mates.

And huge respect for those who want your funk at high speed!
